Apollo 8 brach in die Weiten des Weltalls auf, um den Mond zu erkunden. Dabei entstand das berühmte Foto „Earthrise“. Wer von weit genug weg schaut, sieht keine Länder und keine Religionen, sondern einen kleinen, zerbrechlichen Planeten – unser gemeinsames Zuhause. Wie viele aus meiner Generation bin ich unzufrieden mit der Lage, in der wir uns als Menschheit befinden. Oder genauer: in die wir uns selbst gebracht haben. Uns geht es so gut wie nie zuvor, und Jahrhunderte des Fortschritts haben uns Wissen und Technik gegeben, von denen frühere Generationen nur träumen konnten. Doch vieles davon dient Zwecken, die Leid verursachen und unseren Heimatplaneten zerstören. Wir verhalten uns, als könnten wir jederzeit noch einmal von vorn beginnen. Like many in my generation, I’m unhappy with the situation we find ourselves in as humanity. Or rather: the one we have put ourselves in. We are better off than ever before, and centuries of progress have given us knowledge and technology earlier generations could only dream of. Yet much of it serves purposes that cause suffering and destroy our home planet. We behave as if we could start over at any time.
Der Kern dieser Idee kommt natürlich nicht von mir, und er gehört auch niemandem allein. Doch die Vorstellung einer Menschheit ist noch immer nicht bei allen Menschen angekommen. Deshalb ist es wichtig, dass wir uns für sie einsetzen und sie aktiv teilen. Genau das möchte ich mit Faith in Humanity erreichen: keine neue Idee und kein neuer Ansatz, sondern das Bewusstsein dafür stärken, dass wir alle im selben Boot sitzen. The core of this idea of course does not come from me, and it does not belong to anyone alone. But the notion of one humanity has still not reached everyone. That is why it matters that we stand up for it and actively share it. That is exactly what I want to achieve with Faith in Humanity: not a new idea and not a new approach, but to strengthen people’s awareness that we are all in the same boat.
Alle, die das lesen, und besonders meine Generation, möchte ich auffordern: Werdet aktiv und steht für mehr Menschlichkeit ein. Faith in Humanity ist mein Herzensprojekt, kein Verein und kein Unternehmen, und es wächst, wenn Menschen mitdenken und mitmachen. I want to call on everyone reading this, and especially my generation: get active and stand up for more humanity. Faith in Humanity is a labour of love, not an association or a company, and it grows when people contribute ideas and take part.
